Primary Education
All children have an entitlement to an education which meets their needs as fully as possible; and schools have a huge responsibility to meet these needs. We make sure we do the best we possibly can for each and every child. We ensure the children are challenged in their learning and that they experience a rich and exciting curriculum.
Curriculum
Our Basic 1-6 classes follow the Nigerian Curriculum, supplemented by the British Curriculum. This makes our curriculum broad-based; accommodating all learning skills necessary at this level. We ensure the skills in the various key stages are fully taught and the levels attained. In addition to subjects offered in the Curriculum, we have:
- Geography
- History
- Reasoning & Drama
- Diction
- ICT
which are taught by specialist staff.
In primary, we begin a programme of enhancing thinking skills which helps develop logic and prepare pupils for selective examinations later.

Teaching Methodology
In Basil, we try to keep our class sizes small as we believe that small classes at this level benefit our children by allowing individual attention to be given according to need while offering the opportunity for detailed assessment of each child’s development and progress.
We aim to help our children develop into individuals who have the confidence, self-reliance and abilities to achieve success in all that they do and according to their talents.
By the end of their time in Basil Primary, our children have grown in confidence, have the skills for learning and will feel secure in their knowledge. They are ready to move on to Basil College and the challenges of secondary school education.

Academic Standard and Expectations
We use a scheme that delivers the milestones of attainment for each age group. We offer a genuinely broad based curriculum. The early building blocks, firmly established in Key Stage 1 (basic 1-3) are developed and built on in Key Stage 2 (Basic 3-6).
Assessment
Assessment is an important part of Basil’s ethos of education. Pupils are tracked from when they enter the school through testing, using our teaching, evaluating, analysis and management (TEAM) method.
During their Primary school years, pupils are tested, evaluated and analysed on an annual basis with regular assessment, both formal and informal, taking place throughout the year. These tests help us identify any problem areas pupils have and where improvements can be made. The assessments are feed back to parents at Parent/ Teachers evening and termly reports. Children who fall below expected levels of attainment are automatically given extra support with lessons after school hours.

Interactive Teaching
This is a popular and exciting addition to the teaching resources of the school. All the traditional English, Math and Science lessons are supplemented with Interactive white board teaching.
Individualised Teaching
Our curriculum allows for differentiated learning. Children are grouped within each class according to their individual needs. We take into account the aptitude as well as the age of the individual child in order to make learning meaningful.
Communication – Keeping You Informed
Communication between home and school is critical to the success of a child at school. We encourage all parents to become involved in their child’s progress through school. We regularly hold Parents’ Evenings, Parents Forum, workshops and assemblies so that each parent can join in the family atmosphere of the school. We also have an open-door policy to ensure that parents forge strong links with the school. Updates, newsletters and letters are sent via email, WhatsApp and text.

Discipline
Basil code of behaviour is ensured from pre-school. We aim for self-discipline and consideration for others. There are clear structured guidelines on behaviour. We offer Moral instruction and etiquette classes.
From the early years, pupils are taught an appreciation of good manners and they acquire behavioural and social skills as they progress in the different levels. Minor and major offences are punished according to the stipulated code of discipline by the school with the child being shown and guided to understand why his or her actions were wrong and why a punishment may be necessary.
School Trips
We create opportunities for students to take their studies beyond the classrooms. All classes undertake educational visits from time to time, within and outside the country, to consolidate lessons taught.
School Life
Well-structured Timetable that ensures children have an active and enjoyable learning experience in a disciplined environment.

Pastoral Care
We aim to provide a learning environment that is happy, secure and welcoming. Where each child feels valued and loved. We have student welfare officials who listen to children’s worries and solve them before they become problems. Parents are also encouraged to discuss their worries with pupil’s teacher or Head Teacher.
Leadership
Throughout
the primary school years, pupils are given positions of responsibility and are
taught to be more self-reliant. Pupils vote for their own class captains, House
captains and enjoy academic and sporting competitions between the four school houses
and other schools.
we meet kids where they are.
